What are Pronouns?

Pronouns are words that – ‘replace, Nouns’.

Examples .

He, she, it, they, someone, anyone, who, what, this, that, etc.


What is the purpose of using Pronouns?

The purpose of using Pronouns is – to avoid repetition,and, to make sentences more concise.

Let’s look at some examples – .


When using – only Nouns .

  • Sunny saw that movie yesterday.
  • Sunny loved that movie.
  • That movie has Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles.
  • Sunny thinks that movie will be a blockbuster.

When using – Pronouns to replace Nouns .

  • Sunny saw that movie yesterday.
  • He loved it.
  • It has Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles.
  • He thinks it will be a blockbuster.

TYPES of Pronouns. – First .

Personal Pronouns . – these are pronouns that are used – to replace people’s names.

Examples .

  • He plays Indian classical music.
  • She is working on her laptop.
  • They are walking in the park.
  • It requires new batteries. Next .

Demonstrative Pronouns . – These are Pronouns that are used – to ‘point at’ – the noun that you are replacing.

Examples .

  • This is a fork.
  • That is the sun.
  • These people will help you.
  • Those boxes need to be discarded. Next .

Indefinite Pronouns . – these are Pronouns that you use – when you are not referring to any person, place or thing in particular.

Examples .

  • There is someone at the door, please check.
  • Nobody told me that it’s a holiday today.
  • Anyone can come in if you leave the door open.
  • Everyone wants to join the club. Next .

Interrogative Pronouns . – these are the Pronouns that you use – when you want to ask a question about a Noun.

Examples.

  • What did you buy?
  • Which of these books have you finished?
  • Who said that?
  • Whom did you give it to? Next .

Relative Pronouns .– these are Pronouns that you use – when you need to add some more information into a sentence – about a Noun that has already been mentioned in that sentence before.

Examples.

  • She is the girl who helped me yesterday.
  • These are the children whose paintings are selected.
  • IBM is the company that I was telling you about.
  • Ajay has submitted a report which contains the details about our plan.

Reflexive Pronouns .– these are the Pronouns that are used – when the subject and the object of a sentence, are the same.

Examples.

  • He will do it himself.
  • The wound will heal itself.
  • You need to take care of yourself.
  • I will do this myself.
