There are three different Articles that we use to determine nouns – .

  • A .
  • An . and
  • The .

When to use. – ‘A’. and, ‘An’ .

Use. – A. and, An. when you want to clarify, that you are talking about – ‘any ONE member, of a particular category, and, when it is unimportant to mention, – exactly which member, until, someone asks.

Example 1.

I need a pen.

This means that you need – ‘one pen‘. And, ‘any pen‘ will work for you.


Example 2.

He is a manager.

This means that he is – ‘one of the many managers‘.

I am writing an article.

This means that you are writing – ‘one article‘, and it is unimportant to mention ‘which article’, until, someone asks. Now,


What is the difference between – ‘A’ and ‘An’ .

The difference is in their usage.

‘A’, is used before all words starting with – a ‘consonant sound’.

Examples.

  • A company.
  • A project.
  • A speech.
  • A nation. and

‘An’, is used before all words starting with – a ‘vowel sound’.

Examples .

  • An, article.
  • An, office.
  • An, hour.
  • An, Oscar. Now,

When to use – ‘The’

Use ‘the’, when you want to clarify that – you are talking about – ‘not just any’ – but – ‘a particular member’ or ‘a particular group of members’ of a certain category.

Example 1.

This is the book that you gave me.

Which book? – A particular book – that you gave me.


Example 2.

He is the guy that I told you about.

Which guy? – A particular guy – that I told you about.


Example 3.

The rooms in this hotel are very clean.

Which rooms? – The rooms – in this hotel.
