What are adjectives?

Adjectives are words that are used for describing – the ‘Qualities’ or ‘Condition’ of nouns and pronouns.

Examples of adjectives that describe QUALITIES are.

  • Beautiful .
  • Strong .
  • Weak .
  • Capable .
  • Incapable .
  • Intelligent . etc. 

Examples of adjectives that describe CONDITION are .

  • Tired .
  • Angry .
  • Sick .
  • Healthy .
  • Broken .
  • Intact  etc.    now,

What is the purpose of using adjectives?

Adjectives are used for the following purposes – .

    1. To tell about – ‘the state or condition‘ – of someone or something.
    2. To describe – ‘the qualities or characteristics‘ – of someone or something.
    3. To ‘help identify or classify someone or something‘ – on the basis of a particular characteristic.

Let’s look at some examples – .


1. Using adjectives to tell about – the ‘state or condition‘ – of someone or something – .

Examples .

  • He is happy.
  • They are tired.
  • The window is broken.

2. Using adjectives to describe – ‘qualities or characteristics‘ – of someone or something – .

Examples.

  • Rahul is handsome.
  • They are old.
  • This computer is fast.

3. Using adjectives –  to ‘help identify or classify‘ – on the basis of a particular characteristic.

Examples .

  • I need a red pen.
  • She is an intelligent woman.
  • This is a fast computer.

How are adjectives used in sentences?

Adjectives can be used in two ways – either just before the noun it describes – or alone or solo.

Examples.

  • These are old books. or,
  • These books are old.

  • This is an important project. or,
  • This project is important.

Forms of Adjectives .

Adjectives have three forms – .

    1. A positive form – when there is no comparison.
    2. A comparative form – when there is a comparison between two entities.
    3. A superlative form – when there is a comparison between three or more entities.

Examples .

  • Great – Greater – Greatest .
  • Late – Later – Latest .
  • Bad – Worse – Worst .
  • Difficult – More difficult – Most difficult .
